PEOPLE WHO’VE KNOWN ME for a long
time get a real kick out of my job. I don’t burn
the midnight oil at nightclubs or inject collagen
anywhere or gorge on caviar every night. Still,
when I catch up with friends they’re shocked to
learn that I’ve interviewed Jessica Alba, Al
Pacino, or Lindsay Lohan; dined with Jackie
Collins; or received a golden thank-you note
from Donatella Versace. Hell, I myself am totally
shocked. I don’t know how it happened but I’m
grateful that it has, and life at the helm of Los Angeles
Confidential gets more interesting every day.
This issue is bursting at the seams with
such smooth movers and status-quo shakers.
Really, I’m so impressed by these people… and
humbled that they’ve joined us for this beautiful
edition of the magazine. Inside you’ll meet
luminaries from the worlds of style and interior
design, as well as entertainment big shots, food
stars, fashion sensations, babes, hunks, savvy
business peeps, and philanthropic phenoms. |
We snoop around some of LA’s most historic
properties, run down the list of top interior
design resources, gather eco-sensitive lifestyle
solutions, spy on models acting all sorts of sexy,
learn how to be fit and beautiful from the
experts, and rack up an itinerary of fun for the
months ahead. Along for the ride are John
Cusack, Hilary Duff, Jason Lewis, Drake Bell,
Kelly Wearstler, Tricia Helfer, Martha
Higareda, Tracey Ross, Evan Handler, Renée
Loux, and of course all our cool, connected
contributors. If that isn’t an LA-centric thrill
ride, I don’t know what is.
Thank you for reading, and enjoy the start of
your summer!

When I moved to Los Angeles 10 years ago,
I bragged to my friends in the blustery Midwest
that I could travel from the beach to the mountains
in a matter of minutes. I spent weekends
rollerblading along the Pacific Ocean, hiking in
Malibu, playing tourist at the Mann Chinese
Theater by putting my feet in Tom Cruise’s footprints,
picnicking at the Griffith Observatory…
and I swore I’d never take the city for granted.
But it happens. Work and errands invade—
closets need organizing, the dry cleaning has
to be picked up, and now my rollerblades are
somewhere in the garage. Sure, my faithful dog,
Freddie, and I still make it to Runyon Canyon,
but do I celebrate LA the way I did a decade
ago? Not really—well, not enough. So this
issue inspired me to recapture that feeling,
to rediscover the riches of LA.
For instance, we take a closer look at three
local landmarks that are smack in the middle of
our everyday life: the Schindler house in West
Hollywood, Neutra’s home in Silver Lake, and the
exquisite Japanese garden tucked off Sunset
Boulevard in Westwood—all places you zoom
by on the way to work, the doctor’s office,
or grocery shopping. And it’s not just these
established treasures that help to rekindle
excitement about the city. LA’s world-class art
quotient has also shot up. Case in point: In
February the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at
LACMA opened, with the requisite splashy blacktie
affair. An incredible place, BCAM deserves a
permanent time slot on your busy calendar.
The bottom line is: Emptying the dishwasher
can wait—LA is ours for the taking.
