IF YOU HAVE AN EYE FOR INNOVATION IN ARCHITECTURE and urban planning, this is
your city. Everywhere we turn in LA we’re surrounded by rich visual experiences—from the cuttingedge
design of our restaurants and boutiques to the boundary-pushing architecture imagined by noted
interior designers and architects. Entire streets and newly created villagelike shopping environments
(such as Rick Caruso’s Americana at Brand) are designed to achieve new visual standards. And there
are huge architectural projects like LA Live, the revitalization of Downtown, and the Barker Block featuring
the new Urth Caffé headquarters.
We’re especially proud of the new Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA. Not only does it
represent a great architectural achievement, it’s also proof of the ever-growing contemporary art
movement in Los Angeles. As a transplanted New Yorker, I’m thrilled to see our city grow and evolve.
It’s an inspiration to us all.
Meanwhile, the cool breeze and hot summer sun make us want to put our feet up and relax. But this
town keeps us hopping. We laughed, cried, and cheered for Joan Rivers at her new play, Joan Rivers:
a Work in Progress by a Life in Progress at the Geffen Playhouse, and we schmoozed Samuel L. Jackson
at the intimate Neiman Marcus Armani Collezioni event.
Realizing that summer’s the perfect time to support some of the world’s worthiest causes, we got out our
calendar and pegged some dates. The seventh annual Comedy for a Cure event attracted Hollywood’s
finest; the evening honored Teri Hatcher and Rick and Jennifer Glassman for their ongoing fight against
tuberous sclerosis. At the Kenneth Cole event in Los Angeles, guests enjoyed a private performance by
Josh Kelley as the night promoted awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS and helped the homeless. And
that’s only the tip of the iceberg. LA truly knows how to use a tough situation to bring people together for
a wonderful occasion, one that overflows with generosity.
Enjoy the warmer weather, and this issue!

May is a month of growth and renewal,
and on its second Sunday we celebrate
the incredible women in our lives who are
mothers. There will be cards and flowers,
lunches and brunches, Champagne toasts
and the “perfect gifts,” all to acknowledge
the special role they play. We pay tribute to
them for the meaningful lessons they’ve
taught us and the countless situations
they’ve guided us through. Mothers help
shape us when we’re children and young
adults, but what amazes me is how this
process continues throughout life. Unlike a
birthday, Mother’s Day is a celebration of
something far more significant—we rejoice
in this special relationship. To my mother,
Elaine, a special message this year: When
your laughter brings you to tears, it’s the
greatest lesson of all!
